FREQUENTLY ASKED

What can I expect in the first meeting with a counsellor?

Building rapport, clarifying expectations and goal setting are some of the first steps when meeting with our counsellors. There is very often discussion around a safety plan for the client and their families.

What type of counselling will I be receiving?

All counsellors work within a trauma informed scope of care, meeting people where they are in their journey without judgment.

This perspective offers a strength based approach that supports individuals as the experts in their own lives and empowers them to have choice and foster healing.

Is everything I talk about confidential?

Yes, but there are parameters and guidelines that we must abide by within the counselling profession. Harm to self, another individual or children is reportable to the proper agencies. This is discussed within the first session so that individuals seeking services are well informed.

Does the centre offer support groups?

Yes. Support groups are usually run twice per year and are a free service. Topics range from building awareness of gender based violence, creating healthy relationships, developing self esteem and forging new relationships within the group. Support groups are usually held on a weekly basis and there are usually 5 to 10 sessions depending on the topics and group size.
